Guainumbi

What is the project?
As in many places around the world the already underprivileged people in Sao Paulo suffer even more from poverty. In “Jardim Angela”, one of the poorest suburbs of Sao Paulo, people with disabilities are often kept hidden inside the house and have no chance of leading a humane life.
In 2000 Aureliane Maria de Melo Lira started an initiative to create a place for these people, where they can meet with others, do creative work, learn what joy is – where they can just be.
Over the years she received support from various people to start this project, and just just last year she got a donation for building materials to build a new building to create a place for the growing number of people accomodated by this centre. As there was is no money to pay for the labour, it required a group of people to do the actual work.

This project is already known to us due to the work camp that took place there last July.
Our task was to erect the planned building – from the foundation to the roof. This meant we had to dig the foundations, lay bricks, plaster walls etc. Real building work!

The present project:
There is still quite a bit to be done. They would like to build proper paths between the houses, as these flood during the rainy season and become terribly muddy.
Besides the landscaping work, there is the house Aiuri, that we built last August, to finish. Some of the surfaces need to receive their final plastering and then have to be painted.

Funding
The material we need for the project still has to be bought, meaning that a certain amount of publicity has to be done by us.
Everybody participating in this project therefore, has the chance for real input. This is a group endeavor,  so we share all the tasks as a group, and those who wish to, can shape the project and take over tasks.

Behind Aiuri, we have to build a retaining wall to stop the earth from sliding down the steep incline during the heavy rains.
There is a family with one of the disabled children at Guainumbi. Here a shed has fallen down and should be rebuilt. The family is at the moment living in terrible conditions and we want to build a small, but sturdy house for the ten of them to at least be sheltered form the weather. The community there feels that helping them is a matter of priority.
