Botucatu

The Town of Botucatu
Botucatu is a city of some 120,000 inhabitants about 240 kms inland, but still within the State of Sao Paulo. It lies within a wetland region, with fertile soils which have been variously exploited for agriculture, resulting in massive erosion problems and a gradual dwindling of indigenous plant species.
It is also the centre of a number of initiatives relating to soil research and alternative methods of soil cultivation.
Our work camp is to take place in one of these – one founded by a group of young people in the area, who are in need of support in their endeavours to restore some of the balance in the Brazilian ecology.

What is the project?
In the region of Sao Paulo there are big orange, eucalyptus and sugar plantations that have devastated indigenous biological diversity and caused mass migration to the cities, as people couldn’t find agricultural work anymore. The project is located in one of the biggest wetland systems in South America.
The goal of the project is to create an ecological education centre and a tree nursery. This will also provide additional employment for people in the area. The farmers will produce, collect and conserve seeds of indigenous plants and teach students from the city about the ecosystem, creating an awareness of the importance of preserving healthy groundwater.
The project is led by a local group of young people.

What is our task?
1. Completion of the construction of a shed (with eco-friendly architectural techniques) with spaces for ecological education, a library, tree nursery and a hall for practical activities.
2. Taking care of the forest:
Planting and development of indigenous plant species on a 3-hectare area of land.
Reforestation with the aim of:
* Controlling alien species.
* Regeneration of nutrients and organic substances.
* Control of ants and setting firebreaks.
* Construction of an educational botanical route with information on local species of Flora and Fauna. Partly this path will lead through the wetlands and must therefore be constructed on wooden stakes to prevent disturbing of the aquatic system.

What to expect?
Plenty of work and great experiences in the open within a group belonging to a wonderful culture. Working together with local youths is the best way to get to know another culture. Living in local families will add another dimension to the whole experience. Hearing about Brazil and its environmental problems is one thing, but really being there and seeing how the countryside looks, being confronted with the real problems and getting to know the native flora and fauna is another story and will change many of your perspectives.
