Julia writes these words about the Connectivity conference:

All the problems our world faces—from deforestation to global warming, extinction of species to pollution, nuclear proliferation to war, poverty to racism, and so on—are really symptoms of a much deeper disease; the disease of disconnected consciousness.  I call this disease “Separation Syndrome”.  When a plant is ripped from its roots of connection, it begins to die.  As we humans have ripped out our roots of connected consciousness, the health, vitality, and beauty of our lives, communities, and world are also beginning to die.

Connectivity is about healing our disease from the ground up and the inside out.  Listening to, supporting, and activating youth is critical because they bring the much needed creativity, passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to this work.  Ultimately it is the youth who inherit the ever-worsening symptoms of our disease of disconnect, so it is vitally important that we all do everything we can to help heal the future we are living into.

Why we invited her...

Julia Butterfly Hill brought international attention to the plight of the world’s last remaining ancient forests when she climbed 180 feet into the branches of a 1000 year-old redwood tree and refused to come down.  Her historic protest to the environmental destruction caused by the clear-cutting of ancient redwoods culminated after 738 days with an agreement that provided permanent protection for the tree known as Luna and a 3 acre buffer-zone around it.

Julia Butterfly Hill is an activist, a writer and a poet.  She is the author of the national best seller The Legacy of Luna and the co-author of One Makes The Difference, both published by Harper San Francisco.   The audio release, Spiritual Activation, captures Julia’s vital message as it is given at standing-room-only appearances across the country.  All of Julia’s books (and the packaging for the CD) have been published with 100% post-consumer recycled paper with soy-based inks and chlorine-free processing, pushing the publishing industry to a higher standard of ecological sustainability.

The recipient of numerous prestigious awards and distinctive honors, Julia Butterfly Hill is one of the most internationally recognizable figures in environmental activism.

Julia’s book, The Legacy of Luna, based on her personal account of the Luna tree-sit action, will soon be made into a major motion picture.  The film’s producing team, whose credits include RAY, GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK, ADAPTATION AND SYRIANA among others, have publicly announced their commitment to setting a “green set” standard for the film industry with this project.  It is evident that Julia is once again leaving an indelible mark on yet another industry, this time Hollywood.

Julia founded the non-profit organization, Circle of Life (www.circleoflife.org) to promote the sustainability, restoration and preservation of life.  She is also the brainchild behind We The Planet (www.wetheplanet.org), a programmatic project of Circle of Life.  Julia Butterfly Hill speaks regularly on university campuses, has addressed the United Nations, lobbied congress, and has continued to stand on the front lines of environmental and social justice issues all over the world.  Her courage, conviction and profound clarity in articulating a message of hope, empowerment and love and respect for all life has inspired millions of people worldwide.
